Enhancing Gambling Safety: The BGC’s Code Handbook

BGC handbook for gambling

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has unveiled its first-ever Code Handbook, a significant step towards improving safety standards in the UK gambling industry. This landmark initiative introduces measures to protect players, particularly those engaged in slot gaming, while promoting safer gambling practices across its members. Let’s dive into how the BGC is raising the bar for responsible gambling!

Who is the Betting and Gaming Council?

The BGC, established in 2019, is the single industry body representing over 90% of the UK’s retail betting shops, online gaming operators, and other gambling sectors. Their mission? To put customers first by driving higher standards, building trust, and ensuring safer, fairer gaming experiences.

Their dedication to improvement is evident in this new Code Handbook, which aims to elevate industry practices beyond regulatory requirements. With 20 codes and 100 measures already implemented, the BGC has proven itself as a leader in championing responsible gambling.

What’s in the Code Handbook?

Released in November 2024, the Code Handbook introduces a structured framework to protect slot players and reduce gambling-related harm. It’s built around six core principles:

  1. Inform: Clear, accessible safer gambling messages and tools.
  2. Identify: Systems to detect harmful gambling behaviours early, supported by staff training.
  3. Interact: Proactive communication with at-risk players.
  4. Monitor: Ongoing observation of players exhibiting harmful behaviours.
  5. Support: Accessible help services for those in need.
  6. Evaluate: Regular reporting and evaluation to measure the effectiveness of these measures.

These principles aim to ensure a safer, more transparent environment for all players.

Protecting Slot Players

One standout feature of the new measures is the introduction of personal monetary and time limits for slot players on Category B1 machines. Before starting a session, players must set their limits, helping them manage time and spending effectively.

This measure spans BGC members, including land-based casinos, high-street bookmakers, and online operators. By encouraging responsible gambling habits, these limits provide a safety net for players who might otherwise struggle with self-control.

Collaborative Efforts

The BGC doesn’t work in isolation. The Code Handbook was developed in consultation with external stakeholders, including charities and industry experts. This collaborative approach ensures the measures are both practical and effective.

This openness to external feedback highlights the BGC’s commitment to creating a balanced framework that considers diverse perspectives while prioritizing player safety.

Leadership and Ambition

Grainne Hurst, CEO of the BGC, expressed pride in launching the Code Handbook on the organisation’s fifth anniversary. She emphasised the extensive efforts behind the initiative, calling it a milestone in the BGC’s journey towards higher standards.

Hurst also stressed that the Handbook is just the beginning. The BGC and its members are actively pursuing over 50 additional initiatives tied to White Paper reforms, ensuring that safer gambling remains a top priority.

Safer Gambling Messaging

One particularly innovative aspect of the Handbook is the inclusion of safer gambling messages on slot machine receipts, also known as TITO (Ticket In Ticket Out). These messages provide tips on staying in control and include the National Helpline number for players seeking help.

Moreover, land-based casinos are now required to dedicate 20% of slot machine screen time to safer gambling messages. By increasing the visibility of support resources, the BGC ensures that help is always just a glance away.

A Commitment to Continuous Improvement

The BGC views the Code Handbook as a foundation rather than a final destination. Regular updates, evaluations, and stakeholder collaborations will keep the measures relevant and effective.

Hurst emphasised that achieving world-class standards requires determination from BGC members and collective ambition across the organisation. This drive reflects the BGC’s vision of a sustainable, stable, and diverse gambling sector.

Wrapping Up

The BGC’s first Code Handbook is a groundbreaking step towards creating a safer and more responsible gambling environment. By introducing player-focused measures, fostering collaboration, and committing to continuous improvement, the organisation is setting new standards for the industry.

Whether you’re a casual slots player or an industry stakeholder, the Handbook’s emphasis on safer gambling practices benefits everyone. With the BGC leading the charge, the UK gambling sector is well on its way to becoming a global benchmark for responsibility and innovation.
