The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) has unveiled its first-ever Code Handbook, a significant step towards improving safety standards in the UK gambling industry. What’s in the Code Handbook?  

Released in November 2024, the Code Handbook introduces a structured framework to protect slot players and reduce gambling-related harm. It’s built around six core principles:  

1. Inform: Clear, accessible safer gambling messages and tools.  
2. Identify: Systems to detect harmful gambling behaviours early, supported by staff training.  
3. Interact: Proactive communication with at-risk players.  
4. Monitor: Ongoing observation of players exhibiting harmful behaviours.  
5. Support: Accessible help services for those in need.  
6. Evaluate: Regular reporting and evaluation to measure the effectiveness of these measures.  

These principles aim to ensure a safer, more transparent environment for all players.  

Protecting Slot Players  

One standout feature of the new measures is the introduction of personal monetary and time limits for slot players on Category B1 machines. Before starting a session, players must set their limits, helping them manage time and spending effectively.  

This measure spans BGC members, including land-based casinos, high-street bookmakers, and online operators. By encouraging responsible gambling habits, these limits provide a safety net for players who might otherwise struggle with self-control.  

Collaborative Efforts

Hurst also stressed that the Handbook is just the beginning. The BGC and its members are actively pursuing over 50 additional initiatives tied to White Paper reforms, ensuring that safer gambling remains a top priority. 

Safer Gambling Messaging  

One particularly innovative aspect of the Handbook is the inclusion of safer gambling messages on slot machine receipts, also known as TITO (Ticket In Ticket Out). These messages provide tips on staying in control and include the National Helpline number for players seeking help.  

Moreover, land-based casinos are now required to dedicate 20% of slot machine screen time to safer gambling messages. By increasing the visibility of support resources, the BGC ensures that help is always just a glance away.
