Is Dutch Gambling on the Decline? New 2023 Online Report Reveals All
When a new online casino market is implemented, like the recently regulated Dutch gambling market, the belief is that the number of players and revenue will grow. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, as is currently seen in the Netherlands.
Recent reports show that the increase in gambling accounts is getting smaller, and so is the income from revenue.
Slow Growth for Dutch Gambling
According to the Kansspelautoriteit, the growth of the gaming market is incredibly slow, and more people are using Cruks.
The Dutch Gambling Authority says that the increase in gambling account numbers across the Netherlands is stagnant, and revenue growth is also getting smaller.
Over the past few months, the legal market for online gaming in the Netherlands has seen a much slower rate of growth than what experts anticipated. Currently, the number of player accounts remains the same. But it also shows that the gross gaming results increased by 8% since January 2023.
While growth is still visible, the decline is even more noticeable between August 2022 and January 2023, when the growth percentages were at 33%.
According to the Chairman of the Dutch Gaming Authority, Rene Jansen, the report shows that the gaming market will continue to grow even if the numbers and interest are waning. The chairman believes that the market is growing and developing just as expected.
With continuous growth, providers are also expected to become more responsible. The KSA is dedicated to strictly monitoring that Dutch players have access to a secure gaming market. The priority is to ensure sufficient attention is given to problem gaming behaviour and addiction. For the KSA, duty of care and addiction prevention form part of their supervision duties.
The recent findings in the 5th monitoring report show that around 417,000 Dutch people are gambling per month. According to the report, an average of €1,017 ($1,068) was spent on gambling per player from January to July 2023. This means most players spend around €170 per month.
Cruks Numbers Increase
According to the reports, the number of registrations for Cruks continues to increase. Cruks, short for Central Register for the Exclusion of Gambling, is there for those who wish to be excluded from gambling activities.
During the monitoring report this August, it showed that more than 48,000 people have signed up for Cruks. And when the report was finally published a month later, those numbers had already increased to over 50,000.
